Pompeii becomes Roman The years 91-88 B.C.E. were dramatic ones for Pompeii, as it took part in a rebellion against Rome (the Social Wars). Having lost this battle of allied cities against the capital, the Roman general Sulla re-founded the city as a proper Roman colony and settled his army veterans in Pompeii.

The Alexander Mosaic, dating from circa 100 BC, is a Roman floor mosaic originally from the House of the Faun in Pompeii, that is allegedly an imitation of Apelles' painting. The date of the mosaic fluctuates between the 3rd century BC and late 4th century, very soon after the battles would have taken place.

The Alexander Mosaic is a Roman floor mosaic. Before the eruption of 79 AD, Pompeii was damaged by a powerful earthquake in AD 62. It seems that the House of the Faun was damaged but later repaired and rebuilt. Excavations have found five bodies of people who perished in the building during the eruption (including three boys and one woman).
